The hidden problem

Less greenhouse gas, more money

Most people don’t really think about the impact their own food waste could be having on the climate as it’s not easy to see the links. But food waste contributes 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. We discard 7 million tonnes of food each week in the UK about a third of all the food produced, and much of it is still fit to eat.

Have a guess at the right answer here:

How much food does the average UK household waste each year?

10%

20%

30%

40%

Because of this, reducing food waste is one of the main goals that the United Nations has put together to combat climate change. The goal is to reduce food wasted at home by half by 2030. Small changes in what you buy and how you use it will not only help to reach this essential target, but it will also save you money.
